Tutor Corps Onboarding Guide
We’re excited to have you in this year’s cohort and appreciate your commitment to supporting students across the country. Below is everything you need to get started for the June 1 launch.
1. Join Slack
All Tutor Corps communication happens on Slack.
- Join our Slack workspace
- Join the Tutor Corps Slack Channel (this will be sent to you)
- Join the substitute tutor channel
Slack is where you can ask questions, share resources, and connect with other tutors throughout the year.
2. Review the TC Overview
Review the Tutor Corps Overview doc.
It explains the program timeline, required milestones, hour expectations, and award details. Make sure you understand what you’ll need to complete by the end of the program.
3. Complete Required Forms
- If you are under 18, return the parental consent form to ali.philbrick@learntobe.org (this will be emailed)
- If you are in the U.S. on a visa, confirm that you’re allowed to receive the $1,000 award
- Submit a W-9 through Gusto so we can process your end-of-year payment (after completing the program)
4. Prepare to Start Tutoring
Tutoring begins June 1. To stay on track:
- Connect with your first student now if you haven’t already
- You may work with up to 10 students at a time, including substitute tutoring
- Aim for 4–5 hours of tutoring per week to meet your milestones
- Your dashboard will begin showing your 200-hour countdown on June 1
5. Tips for Success
- Students may arrive late, leave early, or no-show occasionally—plan extra sessions to stay on track and use the substitute tutor channel.
- Holidays and school breaks can slow sessions, so build in buffer time
- Long-term, consistent tutoring leads to the greatest impact
- Join Summer Study Buddies and encourage your students to enroll
