What is the diagnostic?

The IXL Diagnostic is a built-in assessment tool that shows you exactly where your student is working in math and language arts. Think of it as IXL’s way of answering two big questions:

  1. What does my student know right now?
  2. What are they ready to learn next?

This IXL video describes what the diagnostic is and why it's useful:

Some Helpful Details:

  • The full diagnostic for one subject takes about 45–60 minutes total. This varies by student.
  • The questions adapt as students answer them, adjusting to their actual level.
  • There is no time limit when taking the diagnostic.
  • Students may see material they don’t know — that’s OK. They can click “I don’t know this yet” and move on.
  • Diagnostic works for Math and ELA. Students can pick one or the other or do both.
  • Once complete, the Diagnostic generates a personalized Action Plan with Recommended Skills.
  • Tutors do not have access to the actual diagnostic exam, only the results. This means that tutors can't share their screen and help students take the diagnostic.
