LTB Student Policies
Learn To Be Student Policies
Any misconduct or violation of these policies may result in removal from the platform, loss of access to tutoring, and, in severe cases, notification of your school.
Conduct While Tutoring
Communication:
- Please be respectful and mindful in how you speak with your tutor. Remember that most tutors are unpaid volunteers, and often don't have professional experience as tutors.
- Do not request personal contact information from your tutor or share your own personal information. All communication and tutoring must happen through Learn To Be. Our system allows texting between students and tutors through a private number, but no personal information is shared. This number does not allow calls. If you would like to call your tutor, this should also be done through Zoom (just turn off your video). Your tutor can send you a personal zoom link to use.
- If your tutor inappropriately requests your personal contact information, please let LTB staff know by email hello@learntobe.org.
- In-person tutoring is not allowed through Learn To Be.
Platform Use:
- All tutoring must take place on the Learn To Be platform with session recordings turned on. You may turn off your camera if you feel uncomfortable being on video. All recordings are private and securely stored.
- Students should not work with a tutor who is a family member or friend. This is not considered community service and not allowed on our platform.
Appropriate Topics:
- Please avoid bringing up personal topics like dating, drugs/alcohol, politics, or religion during sessions unless it directly relates to schoolwork (e.g., history or social studies).
- Stick to sharing facts—not personal opinions—when discussing sensitive class topics.
Gifts and Payments:
- Tutors are not allowed to ask for or accept money from families. Most tutoring is free, though families who can contribute may do so through Learn To Be directly.
- Families may give small gifts to tutors as a thank-you, but this is never expected or required.
- If a tutor wishes to send a small gift, they must first get parent/guardian permission. Learn To Be will not share student addresses with tutors.
Environment:
- During sessions, your background (if using video) should be free of offensive items like curse words or violent images. Please make sure your learning space is clean and respectful.
Prohibited Activities During Tutoring:
- Students should not use drugs, smoke, or consume alcohol during sessions.
- Please wear appropriate clothing (see Dress Code below) and be fully dressed any time you are on a call with your tutor.
Mandated Reporting:
- If a tutor ever sees or hears something that makes them concerned for your safety—such as signs of abuse, medical distress, or self-harm—they may notify Learn To Be staff or contact authorities.
- All Learn To Be staff are Mandated Reporters, meaning they must report suspected abuse or neglect to Child Protective Services (CPS) if they are made aware of it.
Dress Code:
Learn To Be has a casual dress code. Students should dress as they would for a public or in-person meeting with their tutor.
Acceptable clothing includes shirts and pants, shorts, skirts, dresses, or cultural dress appropriate for public settings.
Unacceptable clothing includes:
- Items with offensive language, slurs, or political messages
- Clothing that promotes violence or self-harm
- Swimwear
- Pajamas or bathrobes
- Clothing that reveals undergarments or body parts not appropriate for public view
Even if only your upper body is visible, you must be fully dressed during all sessions.
